While She Sleeps + Cancer Bats + Hundredth + Oathbreaker - Backstage, Munich (GER) - 14th April 2015 (Concert Review)

The room looks kinda scattered and empty when Oathbreaker hit the stage. Probably also cause they start earlier than scheduled and half the crowd isn’t even at the venue just then.

Oathbreaker’s dooming and haunting sound doesn’t speak to everybody, though most of the crowd at least encourages them during the set, applauds, taps along and cheers for them, despite their difficulties with their tune. Say what you want about them, but their outro is huge. The atmosphere they have created before with the vocalist’s demonic screams, the dark rhythm and riffs and thundering drums, get to a highlight then and end with a massive bang.
Literally.
Trust me when I say that this is something you probably need to experience for yourself to be able to properly understand what’s actually going on.

Hundredth draw in a more ‘punk-hardcore’ kind of crowd and some movement actually starts to happen pit-wise. Though, it mostly ends in ‘two-stepping’, of which I’m personally not a fan of … not at all. But to each their own.

The band has a few minor problems as they hit the stage with a proper setting of their gear, but manages to figure that out by the start of the third song.

Just like OathbreakerHundredth only have a handful of songs and aren’t on for a long time. They use the time on stage well though and put their all into their set. Still, there isn’t much to set them apart from other bands in the melodic-hardcore genre. Nevertheless, an enjoyable performance and definitely to the liking of their fans. So if you dig this kinda music in general a lot, you should certainly check them out!

A longer break then takes place as the stage gest set for the ‘Motherfucking’ Cancer Bats. While their new record didn’t really impress me during the last few listens I gave it, I was more than interested to see how they were going to transition it for their live performance.

The first few songs don’t really catch on. Not with me, nor the rest of the crowd, as it is rather quiet and people mostly cram themselves into the back of the venue. Luckily though, after Liam(vocalist) calls them out, everybody moves closer to the stage and with the first notes of ‘Sorceress’ the first proper pit of the evening is set loose. Though crowd participation is still somewhere around the 40% level, the venue gets hotter by the second as the Bats rage through the rest of their set, packed with mostly their older material, such as ‘Bricks & Mortar’, ‘Road Sick’, ‘Hail Destroyer’, just to name a few. Even some of the newer songs definitely get a better image now after being played live than listened to on the record. Ace show from the Bats, as always.

As While She Sleeps break out with ‘New World Torture’, the room explodes with energy and euphoria as the Sheffield boys instantly give 110%. The pits get bigger, the chanting gets louder and the tension before every breakdown is almost unbearable. Special props to WSS’ sound guy this evening cause the whole things sounds ridiculously massive. Been a long time ever since there has been such an amazing vibe in this venue, let me tell you that. During‘Seven Hills’, Loz (vocalist) encourages everybody to crowdsurf and get the whole room even more wild than it already is. Couple of fans join the band on stage for a singalong part before they all leap back into the crowd.

WSS’ performance reminds me, power-wise and speaking of madness, of bands such as Dillinger Escape Plan. While not even half as much equipment gets destroyed during the gig and nobody gets seriously injured, especially Loz shows signs of the same kind of wildness by climbing on everything high (such as jumping into the crowd from the venue’s gallery), diving into the crowd and throwing himself around the stage like a madman.

The chants for more only stop as the house lights finally get turned on and the band has long left the stage.

With only two full length records out and having formed in 2006,WSS are on their best way up to the top. Impressing not only with some of the most creative material of this genre in a long time, but also by showing that it’s not all about looking cool and jumping in unison during such gigs, but about interaction with the crowd and releasing all your emotions into the songs, no matter how many times a week you go on stage and do the same thing.

10/10 would recommend.

Seriously though, this is so worth your money. If you don’t have your tickets yet for any of the upcoming gigs of this tour, you need to go as fast as possible and hook yourself up with a pair to experience this.

Killer Be Killed - Self-titled (Record Review)

#1 of 2014

What do you get if you take a little bit of Mastodon, add some Soulfly, mix it with a dose of Dillinger Escape Plan and top it off with a major league drummer (Dave Elitch)?
This. Exactly, this.

The way I just described it up there, is basically exactly how it sounds. With the influences from each members' main band and the artistic help of each other during the writing and recording process, this masterpiece got created.

Having the diversity of three incredibly different voices in each song is definitely something else. Troy adds his side of harmonic and, almost, supernatural vibe. Max strengthens the thrash sound and gives it a heavier taste. Greg creates madness and, in most choruses, outstanding melodies with his ridiculous vocal range.
Wings of Feather and Wax is clearly a creation of everybody together, while Face Down/I.E.D. has Soulfly written all over it. Melting of my Marrow clearly points more into the stoner atmosphere that surrounds Troy and Mastodon. Dust Into Darkness sounds definitely like something Greg had the upper hand in it. The rest, Snakes of Jehovah, Curb Crusher, Twelve Labours, Fire To Your Flag, all have such a variety of different genres smashed into single songs that, despite the rather simple written instrumental parts, it all sounds refreshing and new, putting a new spin on the whole thing.

I could probably write an essay about this record but I'd rather suggest you give it a listen yourself because I doubt that I'm capable of actually expressing everything that sums this record up, in words.

Favorite song(s): Wings of Feather and Wax, Dust Into Darkness, Curb Crusher, Twelve Labours

Overall: 10/10

KBK just toured through Australia while playing Soundwave and have expressed interest in touring again maybe later this year. So keep your eyes open for possible dates showing up around that time, you really don't want to miss one of the rare opportunities of seeing that supergroup live. Even though I dislike the term supergroup, there's nothing else fitting here.

Crosses - Self-titled (Record Review)

#2 of my Top 5 from 2014

I don't think I have to mention the genius that is Chino Moreno, but I'm gonna do that anyway. The man has so many different projects going on, it's hard to keep count. None the less, each of them manage to impress in their own way. So does Crosses.

As soon as I had heard Bitches Brew for the first time on an UK radio station, I reached out to find the whole record and was blown away by what I found. Having released several songs before, now combined into one record, the atmosphere this whole thing creates is just ridiculous to me.
Many people don't give music the credit of actually being able to turn around a whole situation/mood of a person within just a few minutes. If a song succeeds to make you feel something, you know you got your hands on something special. That's how it is with Crosses. There has yet to be a record released that puts me, personally, faster into a relaxed, calm and comfortable mood such as this one. Especially The Epilogue and Prurient are two of the most powerful songs on the record. Simple and slow, yet powerful. Maybe not the kind of strength to make you want to flip a table and rearrange your house by raging through it. But more of the mental kind of strength.

If you're looking for a perfect occasion to give this record a first shot, I'd suggest to put it on while on a long drive at night. It's certainly my favorite setting.

Favorite song(s): The Epilogue, Prurient, Blk Stallion

Overall: 10/10

They're not currently touring but rumor has it that Deftones our ready to release a new record this autumn. So make sure to be on the lookout for that!

Upon A Burning Body - The World Is My Enemy Now (Record Review)

Continuing with my Top 5 from the past year, we're getting closer to the top with this one.

This record is such a huge change to what they used to put it, especially considering their debut record. While they could've gotten labeled as Deathcore with The World Is Ours, they already progressed into the more melodic and groove driven era of the genre with Red.White.Green. Yet, still tamed by the fact of constructing movie themed records, their full potential wasn't presented.
With The World Is My Enemy Now, they were finally able to do what they really wanted to do. Having evolved from a Warped Tour band to actually going on tour with bigger acts in the scene such as getting put on Mayhem Tour with Slipknot, or Five Finger Death Punch's European run back in the beginning of 2014.

Red Razor Wrists instantly throws you into the pits of hell that is this record. With Danny having immensely increased the quality of his vocal performance, the thundering riffs put you into the right mood for the rest of the album. They manage to outrun the danger of creating generic breakdowns by writing diverse riffs around it immediately, leaving you craving for more. With Scars, you realize that they definitely moved away from their deathcore sound, if it wasn't already clear before, and tend to embrace their rhythmic and melodic side way more than before. If there's a part in this song which doesn't make you want to jump along, or at least tap your foot, let me know, cause I cannot find a single second of it. With the new freedom of writing lyrics completely from their own mind, without having to make it all fit a theme, they display their personal attitude very clearly in almost every single song. By creating such a big setting for this record, they manage to draw the listener into it even more as it runs through and get them excited for more to come.
Going from massive breakdowns (Bring The Rain), raging anthems (Pledge Your Allegiance), to more groove driven, very Pantera-influenced tracks (The New Breed) and then drop a Spanish instrumental interlude is nothing just any band can do. But they manage to fuze it all together perfectly.

If you're looking for something diverse from the Texan corner of the music scene, you should definitely give this bad boy a listen.

Favorite song(s): Red Razor Wrists, Pledge Your Allegiance, The World Is My Enemy Now, Middle Finger To The World

Overall: 10/10

And if you're not completely convinced by their latest release, make sure to check those sharp-dressed guys out live soon. Their live performance is something you shouldn't miss.

Marmozets - The Weird And Wonderful (Record Review)

Another late one from my Top 5 of 2014.

But Marmozets are simply a band the world needs to get to know more these days.

Seeing as I'm usually not too fond of many female voices, Becca's is ... something else. It's not about always hitting the right notes but sometimes just get up and scream into a mic if you feel like it. Which is exactly what's being expressed in Born Young And Free. Nevertheless, her vocal performance is outstanding and on point when it has to be.
Their sound is incredibly refreshing in the dull pool of breakdown riffs and mindless shredding that is around today, their diversity in sound and song construction is a welcome change.
Why Do You Hate Me is another full on frontal rager, before it then flows into Captivate You which shows the softer and more melodic side of the quintett, displaying Becca's vocal skills properly. Is It Horrible is one of my personal favorites, starting off with a simple drum beat, slowly getting more hectic once the other instruments join in and the first vocals sound through before it really hits off. Having two voices lead up to the chorus creates a fun and dynamic setting as it then dives into the more harmonic sides again. To pick apart every song like this would be mental and unnecessary.
Let's just try to round this up saying that the record manages to bind together a huge range of diversity into 13 tracks, with none of those ever appearing tiring or like anything you ever heard before.

There had been so much raving about these guys from several friends in the UK and I can say that I was not disappointed at all when their debut record finally dropped in Germany.

Marmozets are definitely a band to look out for in the next few years. With such potential and achievements only after their debut record, I can only imagine what to expect from them in the future. One thing's for sure, they're one of the most exciting bands around right now.

Favorite song(s): Is It Horrible, Weird And Wonderful, Love You Good, Hit The Wave, Move Shake Hide

Overall: 10/10

Architects - Lost Forever || Lost Together (Record Review)

While this record has been out for a long time, I just dug out my review of it from a couple of months ago and feel like posting it on here as I think it is one of the most genre shaping records of the past year.

This band has had its heights and lows before and recovered from a massive drop in their career. Hollow Crown/The Here And Now is up to this day a rather weak spot of the band as they ended up playing in front of almost nobody in small clubs after starting to fill venues with the capacity of over 2 000 people. When they put out Daybreaker, it seemed as if they were finally back on track and slowly started climbing upwards again. When LF//LT dropped within a year after that, nobody would have expected it to be such a huge progression and recovery, especially creatively speaking, again.

Gravedigger doesn't give you much time to prepare before it fully kicks in with huge riffs and Sam's indistinctive voice. The thought of them ever failing at creating huge tunes like that is hard to imagine at this point, seeing as the first song already has some of the biggest moments of the 2014 metalcore scene.

Naysayer doesn't let a simple spark of that energy die and drags you along the hurricane that is this record. "You can't stop me giving a fuck" states their intentions with this track more than clearly. After that, they don't stop with criticizing and approaching problems such as religion, as displayed in Broken Cross. Without slipping into the all too often heard same old sentences, they manage to take a new turn on the whole subject.
They do not disappoint a single time, instead, the record gets stronger with each song. The Devil Is Near's riff constructions throughout the whole song, Dead Man Talking's huge chant during the chorus, the anthem that is C.A.N.C.E.R., the more melodic and dramatic side with Colony Collapse ... I could go on.

To sum it up, the emotional weight Architects can put into their songs is uncanny and certainly one of a kind. There's hardly a band around these days to manage to speak to and move such a huge crowd with heavy tracks like these as them. To have a band in this genre headline a sold-out venue the size of the Roundhouse in London would've been unimaginable a few years back.
While the younger generations are certainly focused on bands such as them, with the flood of artists in the genre, they still managed to stand out and draw in the fanbase they have now.

They were not only in my favorite records of 2014 but certainly already managed to place themselves in my favorite gigs rank list of 2015. Unlike (sadly) a lot of bands these days, they actually deliver an even bigger show live than they already do on record and create a one of a kind atmosphere.

Favorite song(s): Gravedigger, Naysayer, Colony Collapse, Broken Cross

Overall: 9,5/10

All Time Low - Future Hearts (Record Review)

After getting into them not too long ago, I anticipated their new record quite a lot. And ATL did not disappoint at all.

Satellite is a great intro for the whole thing, reminding me of Green Day for some reason, and while I'm not too fond of Kicking & Screaming, Something's Gotta Give brings you that typical feeling again whenever you plug their music in. As soon as its chorus kicks in, all you wanna do I burst outside and dance across a field as you sing along to it all. Built up from their past records, they had created a huge scene around them and set certain levels for their new album, but, let me tell you, they delivered up to those standard, and more. The release for it was also perfectly set seeing as it puts you into the kinda mood to drive across a countryside to nowhere with the windows down, lie in a hammock as you watch the sun set or just sit around a campfire with your friends. A typical pop-punk record, but with that special ingredient of All Time Low.

With contributions from Mark Hoppus and Joel Madden on it as well, you can't help but get a little nostalgic as you get thrown back to the beginning of this century with all its Blink and Good Charlotte madness.

The whole spectrum is getting served with beautiful ballads (The Edge of Tonight, Tidal Waves), singalongs (Missing You), those typical pop-punk anthems (Kids In The Dark, Don't You Go), tracks to walk sassily through a huge crowd (Dancing With A Wolf) and those that make you want to tear down every wall nearby (Old Scars / Future Hearts). Speaking of which, OS/FH is a massive outro track. The whole thing is perfectly assembled considering the playlist.

Get your inner pop-punk going, jump into a car with your friends and blast this thing as you take a trip to Neverland.

On a personal note, some of those lyrics fit so incredibly well to my current situation and state in life that this record already has a special place in my heart.

There's a reason this record made it to #1 of the UK charts, trust me.

Favorite song(s): Dancing With A Wolf, Missing You, OS/FH

Overall: 9/10

While She Sleeps - Brainwashed (Record Review)

To be fair, that intro made my head hurt a little ... but never mind, cause we dive straight into one of my favorites anyway: this is NEW WORLD TORTURE! *flips table* ... There's really nothing more to add, I think you get the idea once you give the track a listen.
While the chorus of Your Evolution isn't that appealing to me, the intro is filled with a fricking massive beat and some powerful lyrics. Brainwashed doesn't start off too special but that outro is one hell of a punch. The following interlude sets kind of a melancholic atmosphere but Your Legacy kicks you back into it completely (amazing solo in that track). Four Walls was my least favorite of all the ones they had released already, but it's quite the anthem, anyway. Torment is a full on circle pit rager and the drums deserve a special mentioning here. The two tracks after that aren't that outstanding, catchy though. Trophies of Violence is another fave of mine, already predicting neck pain once they drop this live. Method in Madness and Modern Minds can be summed up quite simple: Mother. Fricking. Cowbell.

The guitars/riffs on this whole thing are outstandingly massive and mindblowing.
Make sure you got enough space for a spontaneous mosh session if you give this oen a spin at home, cause it will happen. Anthems, ragers, bangers ... it's all there.

Favorite song(s): New World Torture, Torment, Trophies of Violence, Method in Madness

Cancer Bats - Searching For Zero (Record Review)

Gotta admit that I was a little anxious when I first pressed play considering what other people told me about it so far, plus the fact that I basically dig pretty much everything that those guys put out thus far and had expectations due to that. That's why I let it rest for a bit before really adding my two cents to this.

Satellites was a considerably easy introduction seeing as it had been out for quite a while before the record release. While I can find something in every song that makes me go: "Hell yeah!" (Bass intro for Cursed With A Conscience, Sabbath drenched Beelzebub and Dusted, 2nd verse in Devil's Blood etc.) There's still something missing in it all.
Obviously it's still the Bats. Scott's guitar skills (which are specifically outstanding on this record!), Liam's rough vocals, their heavy grooves ... everything is there. Yet, it doesn't kick my butt with as much of a power as e.g. DSOL did. But hey, taste differs, bands develop and maybe it'll need a few more spins for me to get into or it'll remain this way. However, I'm still beyond excited to see those guys at my work place with While She Sleeps, especially since I'm pretty sure that All Hail is gonna be quite the rager for the pit people.

Favorite song(s): Buds, No More Bullshit

Royal Blood - Self-titled (Record Review)

Winning Best UK Band at the Brit Awards this year with only one record out so far? Deserved or not?

This record is exploding with glimpses of influences from other bands. There's some Muse in it, even a little Manson at some point, Spiritual Beggars pop up in my mind and it is obviously dripping with endless QOTSA reminders, which everybody will probably agree with. Sometimes a little too much resemblance ... while it's great to take inspiration from other bands, sounding too much like them drowns your own approach to this art and will make it harder to really set foot and print a mark into the industry. Nevertheless, let's try to leave that out for now and concentrate on what they created.

From the first note on, the mood is set perfectly, though I did think for a while that my computer was having a stroke. The whole thing has such an intense groove and general ... almost, seducing effect, throughout the record I keep wondering why the hell there's no stripper in the package coming with that album. Cause it should.
You Can Be So Cruel and Blood Hands fly past quite unnoticed, sadly, but I might get more into it with a few more listens. But Little Monsters has me all up and dancing in my undies again.

Favorite song (by fucking far): Ten Tonne Skeleton

Overall: 6/10 (half an hour is just too short with so few songs ... definite minus for that)

Bad Brains - Self-titled (Record Review)

I've had some of their songs in a playlist for a while already but finally took on the task to give one of their records a full listen.

Firstly, I fricking love the vocal performance in nearly every song (especially Big Take Over). Sometimes it's hard to fully take in their one minute tracks (e.g. The Regulator) but they also somehow manage to make those songs seem a lot longer than they actually are. Don't ask me how or why. Got absolutely no clue. But they nail it.
To say I was a little puzzled when Jah Calling or Leaving Bayblon started would be quite the understatement. To go from hardcore to reggae without any transition or warning was ... weird but for some reason, it actually works with them. Already feared that I wouldn't be into it at all except for the tracks I already knew but I'm pleasantly surprised. Some parts are a little repetitive but I can live with that just fine.

Favorite song(s): Banned In D.C., Big Take Over and Right Brigade

Overall: 8/10

The Word Alive - Life Cycles (Record Review)

After getting this record recommended, I thought I'd give it a shot since I couldn't come up with a different one just then.

I'm not quite sure where to start with this, to be completely honest. The whole record is just way too all over the place. The screaming sounds too 'polished' most of the time. Is it a generated voice or is the guy actually singing like that live? Highly doubtable. The keyboard/electro bits seem completely odd and irritating. The guitars are either ridiculous shredding or generic breakdown riffs. There is absolutely no inbetween and nothing to set them apart from the flood of metalcore bands that are around these days.
Sometimes there is so much going on at one point during certian songs that my head actually started to hurt as I tried to filter all the different aspects apart. While there are passages that make me tap my foot along and the clean vocals in the chorus' are mostly good, I just don't think this is for me ... like ... at all. I really tried, listened to the whole record even after not feeling like it anymore after the third song already, but my hopes of it getting better didn't reall get fulfilled.
There seriously are not many positive things I can say about this so I'll stop here and say that it simply isn't for me.

Favorite track (if any...): The Conscience

Overall: 2/10

Periphery - Juggernaut: Alpha

I only listened to the Alpha part cause I seriously can't fit more into today's schedule between work and whatnot.

The creativity and range of this record are absolutely immense and remind me a bit of uneXpect. Obviously without a female voice, duh.
While two interludes seem a little much to me, it still fits the record pretty well. What got me the most in every song was that outrageous vocal performance. Simply outstanding. Spencer's voice is just as chilling live as it is on record. What a voice.
To go from creatively overwhelming songs such as MK Ultra, to more a more 'mainstream' setting as in Alpha isn't something just anybody can do. But through the story that is being told as it is, stretched across this double-record, it works perfectly with each other.

Favorite track(s): Alpha, 22 Faces and Rainbow Gravity

Overall: 8/10

The Amity Affliction - Chasing Ghosts (Record Review)

The first two songs seem a little too similar to me already. While they are well constructed, they don't differ much from each other. To have this as a first setting for the record, isn't exactly a great start.
RIP Bon has me finally moving along a little and definitely makes it into the upper section of my faves. Open Letter is to my liking once more, especially the drums and general structure/development of the song. Chorus and lyrics are another plus, yet the shouting seems to turn more and more monotone from song to song. I Heart H.,C. deserves a special mentioning again due to it finally being exceptionally diverse to any previous track. But the second Flowerbomb starts, we're back at square one.

This whole record is really hard to tell apart in general. While every song has a part here or there that stands out, it's all too monotone and creatively not as great as it could be. At least to me. I really dig those guys live and how they get the crowd going and communicate with their audience and I think that's how it'll remain. Great live band. Far from being as impressive on record.

Favorite Track: I Heart H.C.

Overall: 6/10

Stick To Your Guns - Diamond (Record Review)

I can't even count the times I've seen those guys live already. It feels like they stop by our venue every other month as if we're their summer house at the lake. But I had never just once listened to a song, let alone a full album.

Took me a few songs to get into it but I was pleasantly surprised by what I heard. To me, the record definitely grows stronger towards the end. Some songs are a bit too short to me (hardly time to take them in) and I'm a little unsure about the shouting in a few tracks. While short songs are nothing unusual in this genre, they need a certain power and lyrical strength to really last. Sadly, that's not the case with some tracks. Lyrically, I really dig the whole thing in general and there certainly are some parts that make me want to bash my head through a wall.
A+ for the drums on this entire thing.

Favorite song: Empty Heads

Kimbra - The Golden Echo (Record Review)

I had heard of her before and also had listened to a song or two, but only really got interested due to Ben from Dillinger post about her and report about her on Party Smasher Inc. (www.partysmasherinc.com)

That first song already has me head over heels due to that immense development of different sounds and voice interpretations within one single track. The diversity in her voice is truly amazing. Whenever she starts singing, you'd know instantly it was her without a second thought. Miracle sets me a few decades back with its unique and 'old school pop' sound. The background instrumental parts are so simple, but they sure as hell embrace you tightly like you're caught in a spider web anyway. For a change, and to my own surprise, the interludes between the songs actually fit really well and don't seem bothering at all. So another plus for that.
Sometimes the songs seem a bit too long to me though. I've said this before, but, man, her vocal diversity is so impressive.

Fave track(s): Goldmine, Madhouse and Nobody But You

Bring Me The Horizon - Sempiternal (Record Review)

To begin with, I admit that I used to be one of those people who refused to listen to BMTH due to all the prejudices about them back in the days. No song that I heard around that time was really for me. Sadly, those prejudices got verified to me when I saw them live at Rock am Ring 2011 and wasn't impressed with their live performance, whatsoever.

But, almost a year ago in a club in the UK, Sleepwalking was playing and when I asked about the artist to find out that it was by them, I was a little taken aback, to be completely fair. Ever since then, having matured with my taste in music and generally, I#ve noted it down in my mind to check them out properly again and give them another chance.

Now, duringone of my nightshifts the other day, Sleepwalking got played again and reminded me of the face of not having listened to that album still, so here we are finally.

Can You Feel My Heart is a perfect choice as an intro, showing the more melodic side of BMTH and introducing the new sound fairly well. It's not an instant kick in the face and an all balls to the wall banger, which is rather refreshing. The House of Wolves has me interested as long as the verses are going. The rather uncreative 'brick by brick' chanting irritates me, if anything, as well as the weak chorus in comparison to the raging verses. Empire instantly has me moving again with it's crawling intro which leads to this anthem-like tack and the chanting chorus' and rhythm-drenched verses. Definitely especially dig the drums in this one. Sleepwalking is not so much a stand-out track of the record and rather drowns in it, but due to its personal meaning and emotional weight it carries, it still pulls me in. If that wasn't the fact with that track specifically, it'd be a bit more average. Go To Hell has no special spark to it instrumentally, but lyrically is very strong and keeps me curious listening. Shadow Moses leans into the heavier side again then, but sadly is too repetitive with its lyrics for me. As And The Snakes Start To Sing kicks in, I'm really enjoying the laid back and realxed atmosphere it creates, yet, the lyrics, again, are way too repetitive to me and sadly have me lose my attention towards the end. Seen It All Before doesn't really make a difference there either, resembling its previous track a bit too much. Due to all this, I'm more than glad that I get ripped right back into the record by my knickers with Antivist. It probably being the most anger fueled and powerful track on the record, it really makes you rage through a mosh pit that seizes the size of the whole floor room at Wembley. As Crooked Young starts, I really feel like I'm on a rollercoasted with continoue ups and downs throughout this record. My opinion on the album keeps continuing to look like a sinus curve and it rises a little more due to the lyrics which gets damned again though by the shorus slowing the whole thing down again. With Hospitals Of Sould, I, once more, enjoy the lyrics more than the instrumental parts. I've never been a fan of spoken pieces in a song, unless they're done really, really well.
It seems like the lyrical strength and the instrumental power often don't find their way into the same song here.

Favorite track(s): Empire & Antivist

Overall: 7/10

Neck Deep - Wishful Thinking (Record Review)

I've had a few of their songs saved on Spotify for some time already but sensed I should check out the complete record soon, too. Since my Twitter and Instagram feed were filled with talk about those folks the past days, I figured to give them a proper listen now before I forgot about it again.

So! My notes didn't really differ much from song to song this time, I'll just round it up generally.
The whole record is a mixture of tearing down walls with a sledgehammer while yelling those lyrics, wanting to dance my bum off in my underwear and in the end, lie on the floor with a lighter raised in the air to the last notes of the album. What else to expect from a Pop Punk record?

Despite all that, there's a little spark missing for me seeing as I can't really pinpoint a standout track from the whole thing.

Favorite song: Losing Teeth

With an extra .5 for some special lyrics and the appreciation for what they're currently doing/creating in the (UK) pop punk scene, I'd give it an overall: 7,5/10

Issues - Self-titled (Record Review)

So ... this bunch I first heard on The Pulse ( https://www.teamrock.com/radio/show/the-pulse ) with Mad At Myself and instantly loved the song. But never really checked out more than that. Till now!

While Sad Ghost surprised me positively with its odd intro, The Langdon House was a little too ... odd ... in ... not a good way. To put it nicely.
Anyway ... Late definitely pulled it together again, quickly over-shadowing the previous track. Old Dane really caught me off guard, not fitting into the setting at all. Stingray Affliction is more like my kinda thing again and persuades me back into the record with more interest. In some tracks, it's definitely a bit too synthesizer-heavy and the clean vocals are not always as striking as they could come out. While I hear a lot of Ateyu influences in the whole thing, Issues are missing their power on this album a few times too often.

Genereally, I enjoy around half of the tracks and the other half leave me confused and startled by what they were thinking when including a certain sequence. The darker, and more dooming, side certainly has me moving along in a hurricane-like circle (like Personality Cult) but sadly, that's not the case most of the time. I can see their potential but they're just not for me. At least with that record.

Favorite song: Stingray Affliction

Overall: 5/10

Issues are currently on tour supporting All Time Low in the USA on their 'Future Hearts' tour. Check their website for a date near you: http://issuesrock.us/Events

Brand New - The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me (Record Review)

First of all, how has nobody slapped me yet cause of never having listened to this before? Just how?
Cause this record left me in nothing but absolute awe.

When Sowing Season started, I did not expect it to explode in such a way. In every song, the guitar, bass and drums are so simple, but yet so haunting. The way the vocals play with the wide range of creativit left due to the instrumental simplicity is just absolutely magnificent. Those notes leave me in a mood of an absolute peace of mind, similar to the effect Crosses' self-titled has on me, or any City & Colour album, despite the difference in genres. They all calm my mind, yet they're all one of a kind.
Some parts gave me continous waves of goosebumps such as Sowing Season when the chorus kicked in, all of Millstone, that power in You Won't Know from 1:35 on, the way one instrument after the other joins in during Handcuffs, when Luca's mood and power took a 180° turn and nearly knocked me out of bed ... I could probably elaborate on that for some more but I think you get the point.

Favorite song: Millstone

After collecting my jaw from the ground again, I can happily say that it's an overall: 10/10

Brand New are about to start a run through the US before heading over to Europe for a few shows. Check their facebook for more info: https://www.facebook.com/BrandNew

Of Mice & Men - Restoring Force (Record Review)

When they first surfaced, I checked them out but wasn't that interested in them so their path so far has somewhat slipped past me. Seeing though as they are all over the place these days, I've been thinking about giving them another chance for quite some time and now managed to listen to this.

I'm still not too sure about Austin's voice in some places, but overall, it fits the music. While the album has a few (huge) moments, it still lacks that special something for me to set them apart from the other artists in this genre. The songs mostly start off great, but then don't improve from there (apart from Another You, which gets better towards the end), which is a bit disappointing. Especially since I peeked a little into The Flood as well and found some proper gems.

Nevertheless, I still enjoyed listening to the record as a whole and was surprised when noticing that I heard some of those songs before. I can certainly say though that those songs work a whole lot better live than they do on record. There's still a lot of room for improvement though from this point on, so let's see how they continue from here on.

Favorite song: Public Service Announcement

Overall: 6/10

All Time Low - Don't Panic (Record Review)

I was in quite an exhausted and bad mood this evening, but the second the first song started, I couldn't help but sway along to the rhythm and get better. I've abandoned my inner pop punk self for too long again, I recogn.
Was never too interested in ATL ever since I heard of them a couple of years ago but now I finally gave them a listen, I really enjoy it. Their influences clearly peek out and come through in almost every song with adds a bit of a nostalgic touch to the whole thing.

Few songs into the record, I couldn't help but crawl out of bed again and dance around the room in my pj's. While the songs are not ... let's say ... too different and varying from each other, there are still some parts that stand out. Maybe especially cause of that. E.g. the drums in Outlines, the guitar arrangement in The Irony Of (...), and so on.

Was also pleased to find out that they're from Baltimore (GO RAVENS!). What personally surprised me was the fact that I actually genuinely enjoy the vocalist seeing as I'm usually not too much into such clean and ... "innocent" voices, but hey, I guess it fits the genre pretty well.

Favorite song: The Irony Of Choking On A Lifesaver

Overall: 9/10

The Ghost Inside - Dear Youth (Record Review)

This is my first choice since lots of people I know raved so much about it.
While I've seen them live before, I simply refused to give them a chance for some reason, but whatever, here we go.

I totally dig all these huge intros they have for each (except Phoenix Flame), I hear so many these days that cannot be told apart and I love being able to instantly get caught in a song solely by the first few notes. One thing which really bothered me, especially with the first few, were the backing vocals. Unnecessary and irritating, if you ask me. They only fit into the setting of With The Wolves. While some of the instrumental parts seemed similar and boring, some others really stood out massively, e.g. chorus of Move Me, Mercy's and The Ohter Half's intro, the riffs in Dear Youth towards the end.
Blank Pages closes up the record pretty nicely as well, setting a proper closing scenery.

Favorite song: My Endnote (so, so massive)

Overall: 6/10

Introduction

Bonjour! Bongiorno! And welcome to my blog!

Very catchy, totally not over-used, introduction, I know.

Anyway, here's what you're gonna find on this site. First of all, I work as a venue manager in Germany and, due to that, see a hell lot of shows. Doesn't matter if I had ever heard of the band or not, having to work at it has gotten me to a lot of new music that I never thought I'd ever run across. Through that and the endless connections you start to make during a run through the music business, I also got into completely new directions, burrying my uneducated ears in anything that I could and can get my hands on.

Born from a challenge I participated in during February, inspired to join by a friend, the craving to start a serious music blog has grown so incredibly, up to the point of my procrastinating self actually creating it. The challenge consisted of listening to a new record every day of the month and leaving your opinion on it afterwards. This got me into so, so many bands, old or new. Brand New, All Time Low, Bring Me The Horizon, you name it. I've had prejudices about several of those bands and never even gave them a chance before without having heard more than one track. There's so much more to explore if you just keep an open mind despite previous let downs. Take a look at Manson's new record, for example, The Pale Emperor is amazing! Unlike the previous record, which ... wasn't all that great.

I'll first start re-publishing my old reviews from Instagram and then continue to write proper ones for new releases or suggestions I get through here/Twitter/Instagram/some other social network mess. There are a few gig reviews I have finished already as well, but will probably have to rephrase a lot of them again to fit in.

I am no professional. I didn't go to a fancy journalism college or work for any kind of magazine, whatsoever. The opinions displayed and expressed here are none but my own. So beware of some foolish mistakes, if I end up making some, considering the quality of a band or certain parts of their creation. So, seeing as I've not been trained for this, you won't find too precise pick-aparts of songs, analyzing certain passages with any musical knowledge, but only my personal interpretation of it all. Which, to me, is only to try and motivate other people with a similar set of mind to give those records/bands a try. I, personally, value reviews like that more than anything simply filled with musical terms the regular listener doesn't even understand, or had ever heard of to begin with.
Follow your own judgement on this. The one above is mine.

Alright then, so if you have any bands you wanna shove into my face, go ahead! I'll try to listen to them all at some point.
